Chicken with curry sauce fills the center of this manapua. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century brought char siu bao with them to work in the sugar cane and pineapple plantations in Hawaii. The term bao is Chinese for bun. Eventually, it took on the Hawaiian term of manapua. It comes fully cooked and tastes best when steamed and served warm.
